The Little Rann of Kutch is a sprawling salt desert in the Kutch district of Gujarat in western India, which gets flooded during the monsoon and thus changes into a singular wetland environment. At its margins are some raised bits of land, called bets, which are covered with Acacia and tough shrubs, and thus, they are the great spots for seeing the smaller bird species of the Rann.
This entire area, to a great extent, is preserved as the Indian Wild Ass Sanctuary, which was set up in 1972 for the protection of the endangered Indian Wild Ass, one of the few wild equine species living on this planet.
Besides the wild ass, this sanctuary accommodates fauna typical for an arid environment, such as the Desert Fox, Desert Cat, and Striped Hyena, while in the winter, it becomes a haven for a multitude of migratory birds, it is a well-established place for birdwatching and wildlife discovery.
